Nelson Evening Mail, Tuesday 15th Oct. 1963: ELDERLY MAN'S DEATH FROM ACCIDENT.
An 81 year old widower, Mr. Charles Andrew Grainger, was knocked over and killed by a reversing lorry at Tahunanui this morning. The accident occured at 68 Muratai St., the property of Mr. Grainger's son-in-law, Mr. Ivor Richards. The truck, driven by Mr.Thomas Joseph Petty, had unloaded material to be used in the construction of and new glasshouse and was backing down the driveway to finish unloading. Police said that Mr. Petty had checked to make sure the driveway was clear but it appeared that Mr. Grainger had stepped into the path of the reversing truck. The accident, which occurred at about 10o'clock was witnessed by several workmen employed on the construction of the glasshouse.

GEORGE WILLAN GRAINGER 1842: 1881 cencus George was a 38 year old brick manufacturer employing 13 men, 6 women and 3 boys. Lived at 2 The Knoll. Bishopwearmouth with wife, 6 children and a servant.. Of Sunderland when married. In 1883 he undertook the researching of his family tree. Records show he obtained permission from the Rector of Kirkby Stephen, the Rev. Canon James Simpson, and the Rev. William Alnwick, Rector of Brough and Mallerstang. He paid 2/- for each entry copied. The Brough records were apparently had a page torn out that covered the years 1640 - 1670. On the 21st May 1886 he emigrated to NZ on the Aorangi (ex London). His reason for the move was primarily for the sake of his five sons, believing that, by so doing he would be providing them with better opportunities for advancement.
He originally settled in Napier as an Engineer for the Napier Harbour Board with his family and in the 1890-1891 Post Office Directory he is residing at Regent Lane, Napier. He was employed as an engineer for the Napier Harbour Board. 1890-91 NZPO Dir. Regent Lane, Napier. Then he became a pioneer in the Kiritaki area. He took a leading role in the establishing of a co-operative butter factory, Kiritaki School, telephone and mail services. He installed the first mechanical milking machine in the district and the fourth in NZ. As well as being a J P he was chairman of the Roads Board (Percursors of District Councils). Both George and Eliza were devout Church and Missionary supporters.

Wife ELIZA JANE FLEETHAM 1842: Birth registered Stockton 1843 4th Quarter xxiv pg 221? 1881 - 37 yrs. As the family were sailing to NZ, Mt Tarawera erupted, the report heard at Cape Town was that the NI had turned over. Extracts of articles written by her daughter Violet May (known as May Cottrell) give us an idea of the conditions they lived in when pioneers in Kiritaki.
Speaking of the challenges faced by her mother she wrote " Her home a rough slab whare, a camp-oven and pots slung over an openfire her only means of cooking for her family". Georges wife Eliza was 50 years old when she began this lifestyle - a far cry from "her pleasant, comfortable and convenient home - staffed with three maids - in the English city of Sunderland". Eliza Jane died Wellington 1918 death cert no. 1323.
